There will be a little Nordic cheer added to the holiday table this year.
In fact, there will be much covert experimental baking happening over the next few weeks, as I prepare myself to surprise my (Finnish) father-in-law with some holiday memories when he visits us for Christmas.
(No pressure…..!)
This will be the first time my father-in-law will meet baby Mélanger face to face. This Christmas could not be a more perfect time to start some Finnish traditions for baby Melanger, with her ukki (grandfather) visiting, and her connection to Finland right here, sharing the holiday with us.
So here is hoping the Mélanger kitchen will be filled with pastries, cookies, cakes and breads that no Finnish Christmas table would be without.
But only 18 days until Christmas Eve, so I better get the oven on!

I will follow with great interest as the area in which I grew up was home to many Finnish people. They were responsible for erecting the community hall aptly named the Finns Hall, where many dances and functions took place. My Italian mother learnt to make Finnish bread which I now know as Pulla. “Munkies” which I now know as Hillomunkit were hotly fought over at birthday parties. I can’t wait to see the delicious creations you come up with. How wonderful for your baby to grow up with such traditions!
Oh, yay! I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I love Finnish baked goods.
Cheers,
Rosa
Looking forward to it – I don’t know much, if anything, about finnish food so can’t wait to learn through your wonderful blog.
Ooh I will be eagerly awaiting your posts! I love Scandinavian food, especially their baked goods.
OOh Excellent theme!! Can’t wait
Love the cover:) I bet grandad will be over the moon..Happy Holidays to you~
Can’t wait. I have to confess that I don’t have any Finnish recipe in my repertoire, so I can’t wait.
ooh!!! am curious and excited!!
I read this with a smile as I have been experimenting in the kitchen with Scandinavian recipes. My mom is of Swedish & Danish decent and my children’s father is Swedish & Norwegian. I did not grow up eating traditional Scandinavian food, but we introduced when to it from my then in-laws. I have always been able to make a mean Swedish meatball and pancake, but didn’t stray too much from there. This year I have been baking traditional Skandi cookies…lots of cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and good old cinnamon. Next up…Polish cookies to celebrate my son-in-law’s heritage:)
Looking forward to seeing how you adapt the recipes to local ingredients! I did the whole Finnish Christmas here a few years ago, but it just wasn’t quite the same without the snow
I’m looking forward to this as well – it’s been too long since your last ode to Finland:)
Wish I had such a direct connection to traditions and heritage… I make a lot of guesses about mine. I will watch with interest to see what you come up with!
Oh how lovely! I can’t wait to see what you create! I miss Finnish Christmas so much! unfortunately I won’t be able to be in Finland for Christmas this year. I’ll also have to bake some traditional Christmas pastries here. looking forward to the recipes and I’ll have to try them as well.
and… Hyvää Joulua!
